Stylish Whistler Wedding at the Squamish-Lil'wat Cultural Centre
When Amanda and Hans reached out to us about photographing their Whistler wedding, we were on board almost immediately. The two of them met in Vancouver, have traveled the world together, and now live together in New York City. They wanted to return to the mountains of British Columbia for their wedding, and their friends and families came from all over the world to help them celebrate. Both have far-flung families, and their loved ones came from as far as Sri Lanka and Australia to be with them.
The warm July weekend started with a very laid-back cocktail hour the night before the ceremony, at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler, where the two families really got a chance to know each other over small plates and drinks, and ended in a plenty of revelry at a local Whistler watering hole. The wedding day felt equally casual but elegant; the ceremony was held in the unique and intimate circular hall at the Squamish-Lil’wat Cultural Centre, and was officiated by one of Amanda and Hans’ neighbor-turned-friend from their building in New York. Dinner was served outdoors at long, lush family-style tables, and one of the highlights of the speeches was a hilarious and heart-warming Game of Thrones-style “joining of the houses” performed by the bride and groom’s fathers, complete with a dramatic joint proclamation read from a scroll. There were more performances by hilarious and talented friends, and some wonderful stories shared. The dance party went late into the night, and featured about 100 pairs of neon sunglasses bought from a bodega in Brooklyn and brought in the couples’ luggage as party favours. The weekend was capped off the next morning with a “hangover brunch” and a very cold swim in Lost Lake, and lots of coffee.
